Dirt E-Bikes for 2020

Riding dirt bikes is unlike any other sport or hobby. The freedom associated with off-road riding and taking the road less traveled is second to none. Very little tops spending a day out in the wilderness on a silent dirtbike taking in the sights, sounds, and natural beauty the earth has to offer. With a motocross motorcycle driven by electric power, dirt riding is not only fun and exciting, but also good for the environment.

In the past electric dirt bikes were designed for kids, and they were seen as a stepping stone to “real deal” gas powered dirt bikes. They were just not powerful enough, and not to mention cumbersome SLA batteries that used to make these bikes pretty heavy. Fortunately, within the past couple of years, advancements in modern technology have made the electric machines a force to be reckon with. Now as the top motorcycle brands like Yamaha and KTM join the race, you can find amazing electric MX bikes that can outperform many gas-powered models.

Are Electric DirtBikes for Kids Only?

At first electric motocross bikes were mostly made for kids, as entry-level rides to get them started on the right track before taking on something more powerful. But in the past couple of years of advancements in technology, electric dirtbikes have become a strong contender on the trail. These silent, but fast machines are able to get the adrenaline pumping in even the most experienced riders.

The majority of dirtbike riders get their first taste of the dirt as kids, but we know that there are some adult riders who would love to give adrenaline-infused off-road riding a try but may not be sure where to start. The electric rides are a great way to start, as these bikes are almost maintenance free. But, you will have to make sure that the bike is big enough for you.

Electric MX Bikes for Adults and Teenagers

If you need an MX bike for your teenager, or you are an adult looking to get into the world of motocross, you need to look for bikes that are over 24”. These larger bikes are more powerful, sturdier, but they are also more expensive than kids’ minibikes. However, the price is heftier for a reason – some of these bikes have dominated gas-powered bikes in national competitions, proving that electric drive can be just as good as, or even better than, gas-powered dirt bikes. Here are some of our favorite electric dirt bikes for adults:

KTM Freeride E-SX Electric Enduro Bike

The latest 2018 model of KTM E-XC, has come a few levels above all its predecessors. The chassis has been completely redesigned, it has a new motor, and the battery pack is now more powerful and swappable. It is driven by a silent 22hp electric motor with 31 foot-pounds of torque, which results in instant torque delivery, which is one of the advantages of electric motors over internal combustion ones. The Freeride E-XC has a removable lithium-ion 3.9 kWh battery that pops out of the top of the bike from under the seat so it can be easily swapped out. Though KTM engineers promise over two hours of riding time, we doubt it can go that long on full throttle over difficult terrain. But this is a fun, fast ride nevertheless that is quiet and doesn’t pollute the environment.

Alta Motors Redshift MXR

The new Redshift MXR perfroms and rides just like a regular bike besides the lack of noise of the regular motorcycle makes. There is no need to be worried whether you would be able to adjust to the lack of clutch or shift lever, but riding comes so natural and easy, that you will be able to adjust very quickly. All the components are top-shelf items. Each Redshift model has a 5.8 kilowatt-hour battery pack, which Alta claims riders can use for about 60 miles on a single charge or 40 miles off-road.

Electric Trials Bike

Motorcycle trials, also known as observed trials, is a non-speed discipline of motocross in which the rider attempts to pass through an obstacle course without setting foot to ground. It requires an astonishing amount of skill and a specialized motorcycle. Difference between a motocross and a trial bike is small, but noticeable. Although you would hardly be able to tell them apart just by looking at them, you can feel the difference in suspension, gearing and power when riding.

Recently manufacturers that are serious players in motocross, such as Yamaha and GasGas, have come up with electric trial bikes that opened the doors to a new era in the world of trial. Now riders can enjoy their favorite sport with the only sound of nature in the background, without having to give up all the great features of an authentic trial bike.

Yamaha TY-E Trials Bike

Yamaha TY-E, is a concept trial bike of the Japanese brand, is designed to thrive of all the advantages of electric power in the competition. With this bike Yamaha solves one big flaw of electric trials bike – being too heavy. Yamaha’s concept comes in under 154 pounds, thanks to innovations like the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CRFP) frame and lightweight Li-Ion batteries. The frame is in perfect harmony with the powerful engine; front and rear suspensions absorb all the bumps and dips, which makes it possible to concentrate on the obstacles.

TY-E is fitted with a mechanical clutch that ensures instant power and control that achieve excellent traction performance; the throttle is pin-sharp accurate. Overall, even though this bike is labeled as a concept, it feels much like a finished product. we can’t wait to start seeing it in showrooms around the worlds.

GasGas TXE

GasGas is well-known name in the trials world. The Italian company is the manufacturer of the latest generation of high-performance electric-powered trials bikes.  The new TXE incorporates a mechanical clutch system together with its six-speed gear box, which makes it the only electric trial bike made in series incorporating both elements. In essence, the TXE uses nearly all the same chassis and parts  as the petrol-powered Gas Gas TXT – but the big difference is its vigorous electric motor, developed by Torrot.

Agile, lightweight and easy-to-ride, weighing only 150 lbs, this is a serious competition model, meaning that you won’t be able to use it on the roads. But when it comes to ripping through obstacles, there is no match to this electrifying ride.

What to Look for in Dirt Bikes?

Choosing the best electric dirt bike for kids or adults can be very tough if you are not sure what to look for. There are several features you will want to look for if you want to make sure that you have made the right choice.

Electric Motor

Electric motor is the heart and the soul of any electric motorcycle. The electric motors used to power electric dirt and mountain bikes come in many different configurations and solutions. At most bikes, like KTM or Alta, what would have been a combustion engine located centrally in the frame is simply replaced by an electric motor and generated power is transferred to the rear wheel via a chain. Some bikes come with dual hub motors, or one hub motor in rear wheel, although this configuration is more suitable for smaller, entry level bikes, designed for kids.

There is also a wide range of motors in terms of power – from smaller 350W models to high performance units with an output of over 50hp. That is a crazy amount of power for such a small motor, so they are almost always equipped with some kind of cooling system.

Batteries for electric vehicles are constantly changing and evolving. There is currently a lot of development happening to make batteries lighter, smaller and with longer ranges. But it seems like the bike market has been a bit slow on picking up the latest technology used by Tesla. Many dirt bikes, especially for kids come with old-school SLA batteries. Manufacturers of electric motocross bikes for adult are mostly using Lithium-Ion batteries in their models. Lithium-ion batteries last longer and generate more power but they do require specialized software to manage them.

Bike Frame

Frame of the dirtbikes should be lightweight, as they are made for jumping and mobility, but it should also be strong enough to withstand those bumps and jumps. Steel frame is strong, but it is also heavy and rigid. Aluminum is a lighter option, and the majority of motocrossers comes with aluminum frames.

Matching Your Seat Height to Your Height

It’s tough to say what seat height you should get matched off only your actual height.  The problem is that some people have longer legs, and some people have taller upper bodies.  However, the following chart should hopefully help you to estimate about what size of seat height you should get on a dirt bike.   Keep in mind that these heights are approximations to help you get a general idea of what size you could ride.  The only way to know for sure what fits you is to go sit on a bike and try it out.

  • 6′ (182cm) Tall and Taller – 37.5″ or taller seat height
  • 5’10” (178cm) Tall – 35 to 39″ seat height
  • 5’8″ (172cm) Tall – 34 to 38″ seat height
  • 5′ 6″ (167cm) Tall – 34 to 37″ seat height
  • 5’4″ (162cm) Tall – 33 to 36″ seat height
  • 5’2″ (157cm) Tall – 31 to 35″ seat height

Even if you are planning to buy an electric dirt bike just for fun, it is important to take your time and do the research on the best electric dirt bikes. Your dirtbike will have to be tough and sturdy, so make sure you weigh all the options and make sure you get the best deal for your budget. Remember that in addition to buying the bike, you’ll also need to purchase appropriate safety gear. Hopefully, this guide will help you make the right decision.
